If you’ve experienced a burnt frying pan (or pot) and the pain of scrubbing it out, then welcome to the club! It can be a very tedious process, especially when they become too stubborn to remove.
Well, we have a great chemical-free solution that will make you ditch those rubber gloves – and you can find it right in your spice cabinet! It’s Cream of Tartar. Yes, the all-natural ingredient popularly used in our baking such as stabilizing egg whites in dishes like meringues and angel food cake.
Technically, it’s an acid — that is, tartaric acid, and is a by-product from the winemaking process. After the wine is fermented, you can find this acid in the sediment left behind in barrels, which gets purified into the powdery white substance that we use in baking. Now watch what it does!
HOW TO CLEAN A BURNT PAN
- Your burnt pan
- Cream of tartar
- Warm water
- Coarse sponge
- Scrape out the charred remains from your pan, and pour in a cup of water; make sure the bottom is completely covered.
- Add the cream of tartar, and turn on to low heat. Wait until it begins to simmer for about 5-10 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow to cool completely.
- With a coarse sponge, scrub the charred remains. Rinse and apply some more cream of tartar directly to the pan, and scrub thoroughly. Discoloration will start to vanish, and your pan will get clean and shiny again. Don’t forget to scrub the outside bottom of the pan too!
